Bet Legends bookmaker Shaun Beirne is prepared to take on a trio of well-fancied runners at Wednesday’s metropolitan meetings, believing each has vulnerabilities that the market may be overlooking.
From Canterbury to Doomben, Beirne’s focus is on runners whose current prices appear shorter than their overall profile suggests.
Beirne has been beating up on punters with these lays, it’s time to either ride his coattails or land a few blows back the other way!
Canterbury Race 1: Wairarapa ($2.80)
Beirne is particularly keen to oppose Wairarapa in the opening event at Canterbury.
While the gelding comes through a maiden win at Kembla Grange, Beirne isn’t convinced the form is strong enough to justify his current market position.
“The Illawarra maiden only rated fairly and I’m not convinced it stacks up as well as the market thinks,” Beirne said.
He believes the race shape could also work against the favourite.
“Faraset looks likely to lead and Wairarapa maps to be giving away a decent start. Around Canterbury that’s not always easy to overcome.”
With concerns around both the form reference and the likely run in transit, Beirne is happy to be against the popular elect.
Doomben Race 7: All Kinds Of Folk ($2.45)
Beirne successfully opposed All Kinds Of Folk at his previous start and sees no reason to change his stance on Wednesday.
“I was against him last start and got the result. He’s a horse that does too much wrong to be this short in betting.”
The gelding has developed a habit of making life difficult for himself during races and Beirne believes the market continues to forgive those shortcomings.
“When you look through his recent record, all bar one of his last five runs have been below market expectations. That’s not the profile of a horse I want to be backing at a short quote.”
Doomben Race 8: Damehood ($2.50)
The final horse Beirne is prepared to take on is Damehood, who lines up third-up in Queensland after transferring from the Ciaron Maher stable.
While she produced a much-improved performance at her most recent outing, Beirne is wary of taking that effort on face value.
“There was a giant jump in her ratings last start after a string of moderate performances.”
He also has reservations about how the race is likely to unfold.
“The map doesn’t look ideal and she’s going to need to reproduce that improvement.”
Beirne acknowledged that Damehood’s older form measures up well, but says punters are being asked to trust that those ratings are still there.
“Her historical ratings justify the price, but she needs to find those figures again and I’m not convinced that’s guaranteed.”
For Wednesday’s midweek program, Beirne is content to let the public back these three runners while he looks elsewhere for value.
