Race by race overview
Race 1:
Always hard to line these up but I usually lean to the raced brigade.
(4) Metal Boss is one I haven’t minded all the way through. No star but improved 2nd run and comes here rock hard fit now. Can sit just behind the leaders and get every possible chance.
(6) Xtravagant Johnny just looked to float a bit on debut and not know what it was all about. Got clear air late and was good through the line. Can take a lot out of the experience and could be lengths better here.
Didn’t mind the trial of (1) Benefit Of Doubt. In a good yard, draws well and can run a race.
Selections:
(6) Xtravagant Johnny
(4) Metal Boss
(1) Benefit Of Doubt
(8) Iransofar
Suggested Bet: No bet
Race 2:
I liked (5) Threeeyedwitch last start but he was just a pass mark. Can strip fitter for that and this isn’t the strongest race either. Some hope again.
Don’t mind the Northern Rivers horse (6) Weownachevy. Ran 2nd on debut and tipped straight out. Trial was good this month and should break maiden status soon.
(7) Zous A Chance has good ability but still green and does things wrong. If he puts it together, he could be too strong late.
A few of these come out of the Boonie Boom race and should be a good formline. (10) Sarigan was on speed there and solid. No match for the winner but better than the rest of them. Loses apprentice and gets senior jock on. Can be hard to run down here with rail out.
(8) Exceed The Sale was good late in the same race and takes a 3kg claim to help.
Selections:
(10) Sarigan
(7) Zous A Chance
(6) Weownachevy
(5) Threeeyedwitch
(8) Exceed The Sale
Suggested Bet: No
Race 3:
(2) Solvent is well bred and was pretty good fresh. Fitter, has upside and can improve. Finds a very ordinary race and gets its chance here.
(1) Money Maestro is a 5 year old on debut and trial was OK without being good. Market best guide but could be around the money on debut.
Hard to make a case for anything else. (5) Super Luck Dragon is ex-Hong Kong and joins the Gold Coast stable. Watch the market.
Selections:
(2) Solvent
(5) Super Luck Dragon
(1) Money Maestro
(3) Zouman
Suggested Bet: (2) Solvent if $2.50+
Race 4:
(3) Veomas is a 7-start maiden who is new to the Gollan yard. The most recent trial was good enough to say he can win. Might settle back but will be strong late.
(5) Ceretti is also Gollan and gets just 53kg after the claim. Has placed in 4 of 7 and has placed in both fresh runs.
(4) Agadoo has been consistent but is a limited type. Can map in front of midfield with cover and be a chance to land in the money.
(9) Mimi’s is new to the Bruce stable and just had four plain runs down south. Only had the one official trial up here and it was very good. Bad gate but off that trial I have to say she is a chance.
(10) Snitzstream has placed in 3 of 6 and can be a stronger filly this time in work.
(11) Lipizzaner has ability but just a run fresh. Needs to improve but I feel he has the ability to do that.
Selections:
(3) Veomas
(9) Mimi’s
(5) Ceretti
(10) Snitzstream
(4) Agadoo
Suggested Bet: Win (3) Veomas
Race 5:
(3) Riez Souvent is a Waller filly who has continued to improve. Out to 1700m for the first time last start and was a nice winner. Has the 58kg to lump but Thompson stays on top and will run well again.
(5) Natoya had great support at first Qld run but was never winning. Did pick up late and was strong through the line. 1800m on a bigger track suits.
(8) Techna was outstanding two runs ago and went to town in a BM70 and went horrible as fave. A hard horse to catch but the run two back says she can win here.
Nearly anything else could land in the money without surprising.
Selections:
(3) Riez Souvent
(5) Natoya
(8) Techna
(6) Barcelo
Suggested Bet: No bet
Race 6:
Pretty even race, this.
(4) Freeland has had very little racing in a 12 month period but I feel she has more class than these. Both trials have been good, Thompson rides and as long as you can make ground and win, she could be the one.
(1) Mean Approach was well backed fresh and got the cash. Is a consistent type and gets the 2kg claim to help. Watch the market again.
(7) Not Surprised showed ability down south and won 4 from 9. Only had the one trial for the new stable and it was good when placed under no pressure to win it.
(8) Galpin and (2) Shot Of Whiskey can all be considered in trifectas etc.
Selections:
(4) Freeland
(7) Not Surprised
(1) Mean Approach
(2) Shot Of Whiskey
Suggested Bet: (4) Freeland
Race 7:Â
I have to admit the win of (1) Crusader Voyage last start was impressive to the eye. I’m probably not as sold as some others but admit with Thompson on again he deserves to be right in the market.
(2) Giapponese and (3) Swag come out of the Grafton Guineas. Both beaten a long way but the winner gapped them all. That form usually stands up well and they can be right in the finish here.
I’ve always liked (7) Vandevelde but had about enough of him now. Showed good ability last prep but just hasn’t gone on with it this prep.
Selections:
(1) Crusader Voyage
(3) Swag
(2) Giapponese
(7) Vandevelde
Suggested Bet: No
Race 8:
Same theme as most of the day, very open race.
Don’t love the gate for (8) Headhunter but he is a consistent type and is tactically versatile. They may be aggressive and go forward 2nd up. Has won 2 of 3 second-up.
(4) Pure Alpha showed some ability down south without being a star. Gollan has a habit of improving these types and the 3kg claim can’t hurt.
(3) Puff ‘N’ Harry has been good in recent times. Winner two back and then runner up to the in-form Moonan Quartz. Draws to land behind the leaders and be the first one to put pressure on after straightening.
If (1) Aldolfito brings his very best he can win, even with the 61kg. Started this prep off poorly but he has been much better his last couple. Draws well again and want to respect here.
Selections:
(8) Headhunter
(3) Puff ‘N’ Harry
(1) Aldolfito
(4) Pure Alpha
Suggested Bets: No
Race 9:
Fair to say (1) Dust Cloud started the prep like a plain type. The last three runs have been full of merit including a dominant maiden win. Led until the last stride last start and if the track plays to leaders it will suit him.
(4) Hard As Brok can mix form up but likely to push forward from the wide gate and be in this for a long way. 2kg claim for decent apprentice is a positive.
(6) Devine Squire is a bit one paced but has been 3rd best L200m in his last three runs. Out to this trip should suit and inside gate could be a help also.
It might have only been a Grafton Maiden but I liked the win of (11) You Are Mind at second career run. Looks a big, strong type who can keep improving. Will like the big straight here and good gate to help.
Selections:
(11) You Are Mind
(1) Dust Cloud
(4) Hard As Brok
(6) Devine Squire
Suggested Bets: Small e/w (11) You Are Mind
