The Rosebud

The 2026 Rosebud (1100m) shapes as a strong Listed contest, with Castillo King coming from an impressive debut win into stakes company. The Michael Freedman-trained colt was dominant over 1100m at Warwick Farm, putting Eviction Notice away by more than three lengths, and importantly showed the professionalism to handle pressure before extending strongly through the line. He now gets another 1100m and looks capable of taking a significant step forward with the benefit of that race experience.

Blue Door heads the market at $4.00 and is the obvious danger, with the Bjorn Baker-trained filly returning to racing and expected to be highly competitive first-up.

Central Europe shares the second line at $5 and brings the benefit of strong stable form – although still a maiden, while Chilly Girl ($6) is another major player after attracting solid market support.

Tornado Valley and Revengeance ($15) add further depth, while Natural Fling, Scintillation, Hidrix and Steel Will are capable of making their presence felt if they produce their best. With $200,000 on offer over 1100m, the Rosebud should provide a valuable early-season guide, but Castillo King is the runner I want to be with, his debut performance suggests there could be considerably more improvement to come.

Vain Stakes

The 2026 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield shapes as an intriguing Group 3 contest, with Closer To Free and Hard Kick heading the early market at $4.00.

Closer To Free brings the right blend of speed and race experience to be highly effective over the 1100m, while Hard Kick appeals as a progressive colt who could take another step forward against quality three-year-old opposition. Both horses however are a query on rain-affected ground.

Myhro’s Ruler ($8) sits just behind the leading pair and looks capable of making his presence felt, while Big Wigs ($9) brings strong early-season form and cannot be overlooked. I was quite taken by the maiden win of Myhro’s Ruler at Echuca when he roared away by six lengths on a heavy track. He’s the one that I think will start shorter and has the most upside.

With a $200,000 prize pool and a capacity field of emerging three-year-olds, the Vain Stakes represents an important early-season test and a key stepping stone towards the Caulfield Guineas, with the winner also securing an exemption from the Guineas ballot.

Quezette Stakes

The 2026 Quezette Stakes (1100m) shapes as a highly competitive Group 3, with Lara Antipova and Natural Fling heading the early market at $4.00.

Scintillation is one of the key dangers at $7 following an impressive first-up win over 1100m at Randwick. The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained filly has already shown she can compete at stakes level, finishing third in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes as a juvenile, and her return victory suggested she has come back with further improvement. Her combination of tactical speed and a strong finishing burst makes her particularly well suited to the Caulfield 1100m.

Lara Antipova is unbeated in four runs and has the ratings on the board. We know that she’s effective in the going and her recent jumpout at Cranbourne was solid. I think she’s ready to go first up for Mark Walker and should prove hardest to beat.

Riverina Lulu ($8) is another prominent contender and brings the form and upside to make her presence felt. The depth of the field makes the Quezette an important early-season form reference, with several runners capable of progressing into stronger spring fillies’ features. With $200,000 in prizemoney on offer, the race should provide a valuable guide to which of these three-year-old fillies can take the next step at stakes level.
