Winx was three weeks overdue but there were no complications with the birth.
Debbie Kepitis, a part-owner of Winx, told Racing And Sports everyone had been waiting patiently for Winx to foal and she finally did so about 10pm last night.
“Winx has been overdue with her foals before but we just let nature takes its course,” Mrs Kepitis said.
“But both Winx and her foal are doing really well, it’s very exciting.”
Peter and Peter Tighe, also part-owners of Winx, had been at the Coolmore Stud property for five days hoping the mare would foal but missed the birth after leaving for home yesterday afternoon.
“We got home after 8pm and Winx gave birth an hour or two later,” Peter Tighe said.
“But all that matters is that Winx and her foal are healthy and well, so it’s great news.
“We are already planning to go back to the stud later this week to see Winx but all the reports we are getting from Coolmore is that she has produced a beautiful filly, probably her best foal yet.”
Coolmore Stud supremo Tom Magnier said there was a “huge buzz” among farm staff after Winx’s foal came into the world.
“It’s been a long wait for Winx to have her foal but everything went smoothly last night,” Magnier said.
“Winx is a wonderful ‘Mum’ and she has produced a very good foal so we are delighted.
“Winx was born and raised at Coolmore and it is an honour to have her back at the farm as a broodmare.”
This is Winx’s third foal after she produced a Pierro filly that Mrs Kepitis purchased for a world record $10 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sales two years ago, and a Snitzel colt that is now a two-year-old but is as yet unnamed.
The Pierro filly was called Quincineara but she was retired without making it to the racetrack and early this week she was served by Super Seth.
Winx’s Snitzel colt had to be withdrawn from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year but has completed his rehabilitation and is currently doing some exercise on the water walker.
Tighe said Winx’s ownership group will meet soon to discuss whether the mare is served again this spring but it is likely she will be given some time off before returning to the breeding barn next year.
Winx is considered one of the greatest racehorses of all-time, winning 37 of her 43 starts including her last 33 races in succession with a world record 25 Group 1 wins.
Trained by Chris Waller, Winx won four Cox Plates, four George Ryder Stakes, three Queen Elizabeth Stakes, three George Main Stakes, Doncaster Mile and Epsom Handicap and has been inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame with Legend status.
