There are plenty of South Australian raiders heading to Mildura on Friday and they look to have a strong hand, particularly in the Cup. Mildura is a track that generally plays fairly, so expecting all horses to get their chance.
Race 1 – Jewels Captain
Small field. Suspect Affair Vue leads from Il Cielo. Jewels Captain should get a lovely run on their leaders’ back and from there can strike over the final furlong. He was terrific first up on the same race at Murray Bridge that Affair Vue comes through and I thought he was clearly the run of the race there. He went into that off a 34-week spell so should derive plenty of benefit and the extra furlong here suits.
Race 2 – Alpine Honey
Preusker and Yendall team up with this gelding who quickly steps in trip at his second start after savaging the line against the pattern at Warracknabeal on debut. Suspect he can be ridden a little more aggressively here up in trip and this doesn’t look an overly strong race. I have him marked favourite ahead of Mrs Harris.
Race 8 – Untethered
Untethered is having his second start for Patrick Kearney and I think he can quickly post a win for the new stable. He didn’t have much luck at Ballarat first up but still posted the best last 600/400m splits of the meeting. He has had a solid trial between runs to prepare him for the sharp rise in trip and I think he will take a power of beating.
Summary:
-
Race 1: Jewels Captain
-
Race 2: Alpine Honey
- Race 8: Untethered
