‘Bloggsy’, as he’s affectionately known, has taken Australian racing by storm.
He’s a ball of energy – good energy. He’s sold our sport to the world in a light so bright it might need a Group 1 rating.
If Energizer ever need to replace their bunny, they could do worse than Stephen Power – and Mrs Bloggsy, for that matter.
For those living under a rock, Bloggsy is a UK racing influencer who flew out to Melbourne to promote the Spring Carnival. And promote it he did.
When his trip was announced, the usual chorus piped up.
“It’s a waste of money.”
“It’ll never work.”
Blah, blah, blah. The same tired response that greets anything new in Australian racing.
But the sceptics have been silenced. Bloggsy has been everywhere – and everyone’s loving it.
His first video was a hotel room tour. You wonder if he’s even been back there since. He’s been on farms at dawn, at trackwork by breakfast, lunching with owners, interviewing jockeys, then on the tiles with fans by midnight. He’s done it all – and documented it all. The content has been brilliant, unfiltered promotion for the Spring Carnival.
Welcome to my home for the next few weeks in Melbourne boys.
If anyone has any recommendations for great coffee shops, breakfast cafes, dinner spots please let me know!! 😍🇦🇺

And the kicker? He came cheap. Racing Victoria told Betsy they covered little more than an airfare – which Bloggsy seemingly upgraded himself, judging by the first-class champagne selfie.
What they did give him was access. Real access. Carte blanche in the mounting yard on major racedays, event invitations, access to participants and more, stuff that most media would kill for. Something that hasn’t been afforded to local content creators (and indeed many media) who have previously sought the same sort of access.

The opportunity fell in RV’s lap thanks to former Ballarat trainer Simon Morrish, who met Bloggsy while travelling Europe with Asfoora this year. Morrish pitched the idea to Racing Victoria’s Aaron Morrison, and the rest is history. Nice work, Simon.
As Bloggsy packs to head home – one suspects he will be back again – the big question is whether local content creators will ever get the same shot.
For years, Racing Victoria and other PRAs have guarded “access” like it’s the secret recipe to KFC. The rules are outdated, and Bloggsy’s success proves it. There are Australian creators with far bigger audiences than dedicated racing broadcasters most Saturdays. Will they now get a chance to film in the yard? To be guests at events? To capture raw emotion in real time?
Betsy hears Racing Victoria is open to softening the rules. Though, that will likely come with caveats about being “in the best interests of the industry.”
The lesson from Bloggsy is simple: one person, one camera, one mic, that’s all it takes to move the needle.
Here’s hoping racing bodies around the country have been watching and start giving our local storytellers the same access to tell racing’s best stories.
I’ve got the happiest man at Flemington Harrison the strapper to Observer.
