The Group 1 Manikato Stakes will have a reduced field size after the decision to move the rail out to the 13m position.
The rail position has forced the number of runners in the $2 million race to be reduced from 16 to 13.
It means several fancied stars – including Extragalatic to be ridden by star jockey James McDonald – face an uncertain wait to see whether the get a start in the race.
The Manikato Stakes is traditionally run at The Valley which is currently closed for renovation, leading to its transfer to Caulfield.
The rail movement follows drama at the Caulfield track on Saturday.
Safety concerns from senior jockeys over the track lead to the rail being moved just before race 1 by 4m (from 7m to 11m), leading to delays.
The track issues surrounded loose clumps of dirt being lifted from the track on race morning, where it appears ‘plug holes’ were not properly remediated.
The plugs are used where large divots or worn parts of the track need to be replaced.
MVRC told Betsy they were informed on Sunday their race would be impacted by the rail movement.
‘’We were advised of the rail movement on Sunday and while we are disappointed with the reduced field sizes, we appreciate the challenges the Melbourne Racing Club are facing ahead of their Caulfield Cup Carnival,’’ MVRC Michael Browell said.
The reduced field means Extragalatic, who is fourth in betting at $8 at TAB, is now not guaranteed a start. Superstar jockey James McDonald has been booked to ride the Trend Edmonds-trained mare.
There is a suggestion however that Hedged, who is currently in the field, might not take its place.
Beiwacht is currently favourite for the race, sitting at $4.50 with TAB.
