The Furious Stakes clash between Rosebud winner Chilly Girl and Silver Shadow Stakes heroine Pembrey is shaping as a tantalising battle as the new-season three-year-old form continues to take shape.
Both fillies have laid early spring markers, Chilly Girl lifting to overhaul Blue Door in the Rosebud (1100m), while Pembrey showed sustained speed to comfortably outpace her Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) rivals.
The pair spearhead a final field of ten for the second leg of the Princess Series and have an opportunity to underscore their respective first-up performances when they take on a select line-up that includes Reisling Stakes winner Chayan, former Perth filly Striking Alibi and Silver Shadow Stakes runner-up Bangkok Hottie.
Chilly Girl’s co-trainer Sterling Alexiou says she has come through her first-up run remarkably well given it was her first appearance since January and just the second of her career.
“Even though she’d had a really good grounding, she was first-up after quite some time, and she really had to dig deep,” Alexiou said.
“She bounced through it incredibly well. She nearly could have backed up in the Silver Shadow.
“She’ll take her place in the Furious and we expect her to run really well, then she’ll go on to the Tea Rose (Stakes).”
Blue Door has subsequently franked the Rosebud form, beating all but Golden Slipper hero Guest House in the San Domenico Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Helping the cause of Chilly Girl is an ideal draw in barrier three, while Pembrey will jump from seven and the resuming Chayan the outside alley.
Tim Clark will continue his association with the Rosebud winner, and Alexiou says Chilly Girl hasn’t taken a backwards step.
“She has trained on well. It’s going to be a pretty strong race, but we feel she’s right up to those better fillies,” he said.
