A trainer’s wife is favourite to take out a remarkable Scottish Grand National triumph, just days after her husband was jailed in a case that rocked British racing.
Former Welsh Grand National-winning trainer Evan Williams was this week sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of attacking 72-year-old Martin Dandridge with a hockey stick, leaving him with serious injuries.
Williams had pleaded not guilty.
In the fallout, Williams’ wife Cath has taken over the training licence at the couple’s Welsh stable.
She enjoyed immediate success when Ask Brewster won at last month’s Cheltenham Festival, and the same horse now looms as a leading contender in Saturday’s £200,000 Scottish Grand National.
The seven-year-old is among the key chances in the feature staying race, with his Cheltenham form holding up strongly against several of his rivals.
Ask Brewster will again be ridden by amateur jockey Shane Cotter, who partnered him to victory at the Festival, and shapes as a serious player despite strong opposition including Irish raider Kim Roque and powerful stables from Willie Mullins and Paul Nicholls.
It caps an extraordinary week for Cath Williams, whose stable has continued to perform despite the upheaval.
“It’s been an emotional week,” she said after the Cheltenham win. “But it is what it is – we’ll deal with it.”
