It was a short but dazzling barrier draw on Tuesday for the $20 million Everest. It definitely made the race a touch easier to dissect, and as we’ve seen over the past eight years, barriers have been a key factor in the outcome of the race.

Barriers and Bet365 prices:

Barrier 1 – Tempted ($17 with Bet365)

Barrier 2 – Mazu ($101)

Barrier 3 – Angel Capital ($21)

Barrier 4 – War Machine ($17)

Barrier 5 – Joliestar ($7.50)

Barrier 6 – Lady Shenandoah ($13)

Barrier 7 – Ka Ying Rising ($1.72)

Barrier 8 – Jedibeel ($251)

Barrier 9 – Overpass ($51)

Barrier 10 – Briasa ($13)

Barrier 11 – Jimmysstar ($10)

Barrier 12 – Magic Time ($67)

*Prices correct as at 9.15pm October 14

Overall

It didn’t really matter where Ka Ying Rising or the other on-speed horses drew in The Everest, but the connections would have been pleased with barrier seven for the Hong Kong champ.

The two big winners were Joliestar and Lady Shenandoah – both draw to land off the rail and do no work early in finding their spots. As we’ve seen over the past eight years, that’s been key to running down some of the freakish front-running types.

Overpass and the Derby Racing team would also be thrilled with barrier 9. He should be able to roll across using Ka Ying Rising as a cart into the race and land on speed.

The losers? Tempted and Angel Capital look the big two. Both had strong chances leading in but now risk being crossed and buried on the fence with most of the speed drawn outside. The other notable losers are Briasa and Magic Time, both possessing tactical speed but likely to be caught wide and forced to work early from their wide draws.
