Betsy’s Queensland form guru Blair Gibson looks back at Saturday’s Doomben meeting to find a few horses worth following.
I thought before they even jumped on Saturday that this looked a pretty thin off-season meeting, and nothing that unfolded changed my mind.
The results reflected that. Rank outsiders Hot Imagine ($18) in Race 4 and Noble Conqueror ($41) in the last caused major upsets, while Epic Proportions saluted at $26 in Race 8. It certainly wasn’t a day for punters at Doomben.
So, was there anything to take away from the meeting?
The run of the day belonged to Let’sfacethemusic. We thought he could roll to the front and prove hard to catch, but after missing the start he found himself a long way off the speed. Forced to circle the field and come widest on the home turn, he still charged home to finish fourth, beaten just 0.4 lengths. It was an outstanding effort and, with a kinder draw next time, he can make amends.
We’re also happy to forgive Too Many Thoughts in the final event. He never really saw clear running at the crucial stage of the straight and his chances were gone before he had the opportunity to fully wind up. Third-up next time around, he looks capable of bouncing back.
