While the spotlight has been firmly fixed on the metropolitan spring carnival, country racing gets its chance to shine on Sunday with the Horsham Cup.
The $65,000 feature is run over 2100m and headlines an eight-race program in the heart of Victoria’s Wimmera region. It’s one of the biggest days on Horsham’s racing calendar, bringing together quality racing, a strong local crowd and the community atmosphere that makes country cups so special.
The 2100m start is on the side straight and they have a run of about 250m before they start turning into the home straight. Horsham is a constantly turning, 1500m track that can often favour horses up near the speed.
The Cup has attracted a competitive field, with leading regional trainers Paul Preusker, Andrew Bobbin and Symon Wilde all represented.
Betsy’s Mitch Lewis has dissected the feature, identifying the key chances, where the value lies and how punters should approach Sunday’s Cup.
Preview:
(2) Miracle Spin is in consistent form, he was recently winning staying races in SA before a country cups run including winning the Manangatang Cup last start. He is rising slightly in distance which suits given his earlier wins have come over further and can handle a big weight which he proved last start.
(9) Nothingelsematters is rising in grade after winning a benchmark race last start on the Pakenham Synthetic. He has a light weight and will handle a dry track so gets conditions to give him his best chance to handle the rise in level.
Suggested bet: Aftermath Win & Saver with The Pendragon
