In the pouring rain yesterday at Rosehill, there was a heart warming moment captured as a young apprentice nailed her first Sydney win.
You couldn’t wipe the smile from Jett Newman’s face, nor her parents – former jockey Mitch Newman and mum Debbie Greaves. As the cameras went to capture Newman’s post-victory celebrations, her dad placed a big kiss on his daughter.
But don’t expect to see apprentice Newman back in Sydney for a while, even after her heart-warming double on her first day riding in the metropolitan area.
“She’s not ready for it yet,” master Matt Dunn said. “It was a good opportunity on the right horses for her to go down with all the jockeys away on the weekend.”
“We are going to do it the right way with her.”
Newman won the Highway Handicap on Considered before leading all-the-way on Band Of Brothers at Rosehill with her family in the stands.
“I was a bit nervous coming down today, but after walking the track and speaking to Matt earlier, I settled down,” Jett said after her first winner.
“Dad obviously helps me as well, he’s been incredible.”
Take a bow, Jett Newman! 🙌

Former jockey Mitch Newman, who had his share of city doubles and was twice Sydney’s champion apprentice, called it one of his proudest days.
But he was quick to pay credit to his daughter’s natural ability as a horsewoman.
It wasn’t Jett’s first city win because she won a pony race at Warwick Farm in 2022.
“Her mother [Debbie Greaves] took her to a lot of pony club and she was very good. She was showjumping but she was small and wanted to be a jockey,” Mitch Newman said.
“She has done it the right way. She rode work and had about 80 rides at trials before race riding.”
“We want to keep giving her that grounding, so that if she comes to Sydney she will have around 150 wins.”
Newman looks a natural in the saddle and only has one win left on her country claim in under a year of riding.
She will remain based with Dunn at Murwillumbah and her mum. She has started riding Gold Coast meetings on Saturdays and midweek provincials in Queensland.
“We want to learn away from the city, so she gets the chance to make the mistakes you make when you are learning,” Mitch Newman continued.
“She has made the transition from pony club to riding very well, but there is more for her to learn.”
“We want to give her every chance and that means doing it the right way.”
