Will Hayes did a double take when his father dropped what he thought was a bombshell bit of news a couple of weeks ago.
He can’t remember the exact words but the conversation started along the lines of “we’re going to keep Ka Ying with you boys at Euroa after The Everest”.
Before his mind could wander to which of the world’s premier Group 1 sprints they could plunder first, David Hayes quicky clarified his comment.
It turns out he wasn’t talking about the world’s best sprinter Ka Ying Rising but instead his traveling companion, modestly-performed gelding Ka Ying Cheer.
The son of Reward For Effort started his Hong Kong career in a blaze of glory with an impressive Sha Tin win but has been winless in 13 subsequent starts.
His one-way trip to Australia was purely to help Ka Ying Rising cope with the travel and quarantine but Hayes is hoping a change of scenery can spark a form reversal when Ka Ying Cheer eventually returns to the races in Victoria.
“He’s finished up his career in Hong Kong and he’s going to continue on his journey at Lindsay Park, like a lot of ex-Hong Kong horses.”
“I look forward to seeing how he builds up because his form over there was decent without him having the most amazing career in Hong Kong.”
“Hopefully getting into the paddocks and being trained in the country environment can help him.”
“Hopefully being near to Ka Ying Rising that whole time, something might have rubbed off.”
