Race 5 – 2:35PM Magic Millions VIC 2YO Classic (1100m)
Cracking contest. They jump out of the sprint chute here with a decent run into the home bend. The Caulfield Heath track has been playing very well, free of any bias. Debutantes hold the key.
- FROM YESTERDAY (Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young / Dean Yendall)
Had plenty of experience at the jump-outs. Has tactical speed and may roll forward from the wide draw, but jump-outs have been ‘fair’ at best. It would be a surprise if he were to win on debut.
- GOLD CZECH (Liam Birchley / Luke Nolen)
Queensland raider who has been given the visitor’s draw, although it’s not hugely relevant out of the sprint chute start with just one bend to navigate. Liked the way he quickened down under riding in his Sunshine Coast jump-out but suspect he will spot them a start and might struggle to beat a couple of smart debutantes.
- GUEST HOUSE (Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) / Beau Mertens)
Saved from last week at Pakenham to run here. This son of the Coolmore winner Home Affairs has been outstanding in each of his four jump-outs. He has had the benefit of a spin around this Caulfield Heath track, trialling well out deep on the track last Friday. Beau Mertens has been on for both jump-outs this campaign – so knows him well. I expect them to be aggressive on him from the wide draw, looking to settle in the first few. A key winning hope.

- INVINCIBLE SON (Robbie Griffiths / Jamie Melham)
Went around in the same heat at Guest House last Friday. Showed good gate speed to lead and wasn’t knocked about in the straight in running second. Jamie Melham will ensure he’s up in the early firing line, which should ensure he gets every chance, but think he faces a challenge to beat Guest House off their recent jump-out clashes, let alone a few others in the race.
- KO PHANGAN (Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young / John Allen)
Was off the bit and chasing throughout on debut when running fifth behind Almost An Angel. Has been back to the jump-outs and moved well enough. 1100m suits better than 1000m, but needs to improve significantly off his debut.
- PRINCELY EDITION (Gary Colvin / Blaike McDougall)
Fascinating runner coming into this off one Canberra trial. Showed reasonable gate speed, used the rails to hold a spot on speed, before being shaken up late and putting two lengths on his rivals. Time was just fair compared to the other trial on the day, but he looks professional enough.
- QUARTERS (Mark & Levi Kavanagh / Jake Noonan)
Was slow out in his most recent jump-out, which was a concern. However, worked to the line OK late. Jumped better in his previous Flemington jump-out, so if he can leave the stalls cleanly should be able to use the soft gate. He looks like he’s still learning his craft but there’s a degree of ability there.
- UNIT FIVE (Ciaron Maher / Thomas Stockdale)
They don’t jump-out much better than this bloke. He was conservatively ridden in his first jump-out but showed a lovely turn of foot when given the most gentle of squeezes. He was put up on speed after jumping well in his second jump-out, again responding strongly to light riding late. His work the last 50m, and the furlong past the post, was outstanding. 1100m is ideal on debut – if he jumps cleanly and has even luck off the inside draw he’s the horse to beat.
- KISS ME IN PARIS (Mark Walker / Craig Williams)
Nice mover, this filly. She is drawn to get a soft run in behind a strong speed. Has a good deal of gear for her debut with the stallion chain, pre-race earmuffs plus a tongue tie, which suggests they’ve had a few challenges with her. But she does have at least a couple of gears and with Willo on board should get every chance on debut.
- OMAN (Grahame Begg / Luke Currie)
Debut run was better than it looked. She got a long way back in the race won by Almost An Angel before running out of room the last 100m when making good late ground. She jumped-out quite well between runs, in the heat won by Guest House. Drawn well for an in-form Luke Currie as well as stepping in distance are all positives.
- SAYALERO (John McArdle / Jamie Mott)
Another who comes through the Guest House heat here at Caulfield. She jumped neutrally, settling midfield, before quickening down strongly the last furlong. She has had three jump-outs, the first and most recent being really good, the middle one not so much, but there’s clearly talent there. John McArdle certainly knows how to get a 2YO up and running. She will be strong late.
