Murwillumbah trainer Matt Dunn is back again hunting the Magic Millions QTIS on Saturday with Boom Torque after a year to forget with the former winner of the $1.5 million at Gold Coast.
Boom Torque won the big QTIS prize in 2024 before last year running third to Hidden Wealth, which also returned to the race.
“We are back here again, and in his best form, he is right in this race, as we have seen in the past two years,” Dunn said.
“There was just something wrong last prep. He didn’t look right over his hind quarters, but since being back he has been great.”
“I have been much happier with him this time, and I think he is in the same shape as he was going into the race for the past two years.”
Boom Torque, who also has a fourth in a Kosciuszko and third in a Theo Marks Quality, featured in Dunn’s best day as a trainer when he won the QTIS race and Derry Grove took out the Syndicate two years ago.
He has been building towards a peak, resuming by getting back in the field when a closing fifth behind Caballus’ romp in the George Moore Stakes.
His style wasn’t suited in the slowly-run Lough Neagh Stakes, but was still only 3-3/4 lengths from Rockribbed at the end.
“They went slow in that race, which we know won’t happen on Saturday. He got back and it was a good run,” Dunn said.
“They always put pressure on in these Magic Millions races.”
“His best runs have been when they go a good gallop and he can get home.”
“I have put the blinkers back on him for this race and he worked in them really well the other day.”
He will be looking for another Magic Millions double on Saturday with Scripted looking to convert two seconds this preparation into a win in the Magic Millions Rising Star for fillies and mares.
“She gets out to the 1300m, which will suit her better,” Dunn said. “She has come back well from a wind up and is showing the talent we knew she had and her sectionals have been smashing the clock.”
“The plan with her is to run on Saturday and, all going well, into the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares.
“They are both good chances in the big races, which is exciting, and Torque To Be Sure should run well in the Sunlight Consolation.”
