Rain forecast for Monday could leave Flemington in the Soft 5 to Soft 6 range for Melbourne Cup Day, according to track manager Liam O’Keeffe.
In a video shared to social media, O’Keeffe said the surface had held up well after two meetings in a week.
But after a damp Saturday, the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting between 4mm and 20mm of rain on Monday.
The rail will be in the 3m position.
“The track is currently rated a Good 4 as of Sunday morning. Received 3.8mm of rainfall during racing yesterday,” O’Keeffe said.
“Fortunately, it cleared after about race 5 for a fine afternoon.
“We raced in the true position here for the second time in a week [on Derby Day]. Track’s pulled up fairly well, moved the rail out to the 3m position for Cup Day.
“That covers most of wear and tear around the home turn, so it sets us up well for Tuesday.”
O’Keeffe said the rain will have the track in the soft range come Cup Day.
“Forecast is for around 5mm to 10mm of rainfall on Monday, so that would probably have us in the Soft 5, Soft 6 range,” he said.
“Clearing showers on Tuesday, and at this stage, it looks a relatively clear afternoon for Cup Day.
“So I think we’ll be on a Soft 5, Soft 6 come Tuesday, with those showers hanging around Tuesday morning.”
