The first Tuesday in November is about more than just the Melbourne Cup.
With racing right across the country, there are plenty of opportunities to find a winner at a big price.
The Betsy team has been through the form, searched for the overlooked runners and identified a handful of horses capable of upsetting the market.
To be updated….
Matt Welsh (Flemington)
Race 2 No.11 Dad And Dave
(11) Dad And Dave looks a big price. He didn’t have much luck in the same race Yauson (and others) come through at Caulfield last start but he did enough late to suggests he’s going OK. Was also a sneaky good run the start prior, also at Caulfield. First up. He won his only other third-up attempt and from gate one I can see Jabez Johnstone having him more positive after he drifted back from wide draws his last two. No moral, but 40/1 is a big price!
Race 4 No.6 Spendacious
Splendacious seems over the odds at 20/1. Liked his trials prior to a brilliant debut win at Cranbourne where he bounced, led, won and ran time. He beat (7) Strike Package there and, if anything, was pulling away on the line. He draws well out in twelve. Scott Cameron’s Dad Russell is famous of pulling off a New Year’s Day plunge down the Flemington straight with Iglesia, who still holds the 1200m record, all of which is useless for Tuesday’s race. Anyway, this bloke can win and he’s over the odds.
Race 7 No.19 Kizlyar
The best roughie might be (19) Kizlyar. He snuck into the field after stablemate Defiantly was withdrawn on Saturday morning. He was backed off the map in the Moonee Valley Cup but copped a farcically slow tempo that didn't suit his racing style. A winner over 4000m at Royal Ascot, he’ll stay all day.
Race 9 No.12 Butternut Princess
Readers will be sick of me sticking up for (12) Butternut Princess, but she is airborne. Has had no luck in recent runs. The key could be drawing further out today which will (hopefully) finally see her get a proper, uninterrupted crack at them down the straight.
Flemington - Zac Talbot
Race 1 No.5 Speedboat Confession
2yo racing is so fickle, however, he has to be over the odds, Simon Zahra/Jordan Childs combination has to be giving us some juice. Full disclosure I do work for the stable but they've had a good opinion of him for a while, Childs Sticks from his latest trial which he won, will be in a forward running role if he jumps, and no reason why he cannot be in the finish.
Race 10 No.8 Cash
Always had a soft spot for this horse but think he's got a fair bit going on between his ears. Last start was good at Murray Bridge over 1200m where he was beaten by Shadhavar who has gone on to win the G2 Tristarc Stakes her next start and well supported in R9 today. Will be better up to 1400m, has a sticky gate but should run you a race for the price.
Echuca - Matt Welsh
Race 3 No.17 Teddy's Trotter
Give (17) Teddy's Trotter a hope at big odds. He was snagged back/missed the kick from a wide draw first up at Pakenham and then had no luck in the straight. Run was much better than it looked in a stronger maiden. Had jumped-out well prior and has again jumped-out well between runs. Key is this horse jumped very well in that recent trial and I suspect from the inside draw is a good chance to lead should he jump with them. Gets in with 53kg after the claim - can give some cheek at a huge price.
