Race 2 – 2:15PM Phoenix Maiden Plate (1200 METRES)
This is a lovely race for #3 LET RIP ROD to kick off his career. He’s had two February jump-outs leading into this and impressed in both. It was particularly pleasing how cleanly he stepped in his latest hit-out, which is important given the wide draw. If he begins as he did there, he can offset the barrier quickly and work across to find the front. The 1200m looks ideal for him first-up and he maps to take catching.
#4 OPULENT OSCAR has the blinkers going on for the first time. He had genuine excuses at Cranbourne when getting back in the run, so his performance was better than it reads on paper. The query is his habit of beginning slowly or awkwardly. He’ll need to tidy that up, and while the blinkers may help, it’s no guarantee first time on.
Suggested bet:
Like #3 LET RIP ROD. $2.25 seems more than fair.
Race 3 – 2:50PM McDonalds Gippsland Maiden Plate (1000 METRES)
#3 BRUISER MURPHY makes his debut for Charlotte Littlefield and looks well placed to kick off on a winning note. He’s had two jump-outs this preparation. The first was quiet, allowed to balance up at the tail without being asked for much. His most recent was far more telling, an impressive win on the uphill track at Pakenham where he swept around them out wide and charged through the line to score by an extending margin. His jump-outs last campaign were also solid, suggesting he has shown ability for some time.
Celine Gaudray takes the ride on debut after partnering him in that latest hit-out, which is a positive. From the inside draw he just needs to begin cleanly and hold his position early. If he does, he looks capable of accounting for what appears a fairly moderate field.
The main danger looks to be #14 BIMBALLA, who brings race experience and fitness. She should spear forward from gate one and control the tempo. This tighter Moe circuit is likely to suit her better than Pakenham did at her most recent start.
Suggested bet:
Market hasn’t missed #3 BRUISER MURPHY but suspect we will get even money closer to the jump. Expect the raced for of Bimballa to attract punters late.
