Punting Form Data Drop: Goodwood Day, Hollindale Stakes and the angles punters need this weekend

From Morphettville to the Gold Coast and Gosford, the Punting Form database has uncovered the key track patterns, jockey trends and horses shaping as the best bets this weekend.

The racing calendar barely gives us a chance to breathe. One minute we’re battling through the chaos of Warrnambool, the next we’re diving headfirst into a blockbuster Saturday featuring the $1 million The Goodwood and the $500,000 Hollindale Stakes.

Gold Coast track

The first thing that jumped off the page this week was the Gold Coast barrier and historical run style data. Wide barriers are generally dangerous, particularly for horses that settle forward or get too far back in the run (as opposed to midfield). Forward horses from wide gates are returning an A2E of just 0.8, while backmarkers from wide alleys are only running at 0.93.

That tells me you want efficiency and map advantage around the Gold Coast circuit, especially with pressure likely building through the middle stages of the bigger races.

The jockeys to watch

The jockey data is just as fascinating.

James McDonald continues to dominate almost everywhere he goes and his figures at the Gold Coast are absurd, returning an A2E of 1.20. Tim Clark also thrives when travelling north for these carnivals, while the local riders continue to outperform market expectation. Tahlia Fenlon, Emily Lang and Ryan Maloney all profile extremely well in the data.

Gosford’s time in the sun

Then there’s Gosford, which shapes as one of the more interesting metro meetings in New South Wales this week.

The rail goes back to the true position and historically that creates a very strong edge for horses settling midfield from wider barriers. Horses with that profile are striking around 20% above expectation, which immediately put a stack of runners onto my radar.

Horses with that expected race pattern and position are: Queen’s Rhapsody (R2 $5), Exit Fee (R3 $4.60), Coulter (R5 $16), Sweynesday (R7 $9), Zambardo (R8 $7), Zaphod (R9 $9), Asterix (R9 $13), Hay Street (R10 $6.5), Hillier (R10 $7.5) and Mogul Monarch (R10 $15).

I’d love to give you the same deep-dive angles for Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth right now, but the rail movements at those venues have made things trickier than usual. Caulfield being out 12 metres completely changes the shape of the meeting and is one of the reasons I lean so heavily on the Punting Form database every week (click here to learn more!)

Now for the bets!

Morphettville

Race 1 – Vaniteux

Small play to kick things off, but I thought Vaniteux looked the right way to start the day.

Brooke King’s claim is valuable here because she consistently beats market expectation and the mare produced the strongest benchmark figures in the field last start. There’s already been support too, with the price tightening from $6.50 into $5.

Race 2 – Bred ’Em All

Betting up on Bred ’Em All.

It brings a perfect PF Score of 100 into the race and absolutely dominates the Punting Form Top 4 Performers table after running more than five lengths quicker than the field last start.

The Jolly stable maps to control the race from barrier one and that’s a dangerous combination around Morphettville.

Race 6 – Arran Bay

I feel dirty backing Arran Bay again after refusing to jump on last start when it won at $10.

The signs were all there in the Punting Form data that day and they’re there again here. The seven-year-old owns a PF Score of 97, the Stokes stable is airborne and the horse simply looks better than this field.

Race 7 – Aviatress

I’ve flirted with backing Aviatress plenty of times because it always profiles beautifully in the database, but I’m finally stepping in this weekend.

Perfect PF Score, maps positively, jockey in form and likely starts much shorter than the current $4.60. Everything points toward a peak performance.

Race 8 – The Goodwood

I’m taking two swings in the Group 1.

Enriched appeals at the big odds after a last-start performance that rates far better than the market is suggesting. The run keeps reappearing in the Punting Form database and $19 looks over the top.

I also think Grand Larceny is capable of blowing this race apart. The market has already reacted, trimming from $23 into $13, and the profile says there’s still upside.

Gold Coast

Race 4 – Bengal Diamond

Bengal Diamond looks over the odds at $7.50.

The horse profiles extremely well on a Soft track, rates strongly across multiple PF benchmarks and produced the second-fastest last 600m in the field last start.

Race 7 – Half Yours

I’m backing Half Yours in the Hollindale and hoping Jamie Kah can produce another big-race masterclass.

The map looks ideal, likely landing one off and two back, and the horse ran the quickest comparative final 200m against this field last start. At $3.60, I thought it was a fair gamble.

Caulfield

Race 5 – Makdane

Makdane is one of the stronger plays of the day.

The market has already tightened from $10 into $8 and I still think there’s room for it to shorten further. Fastest last-start figures in the race, a PF AI Price closer to $5 and a horse that traditionally performs well fresh.

Gosford

Race 1 – I Am Dirty

Priory Park profiles strongly in the database, but I’m siding with I Am Dirty at the better price.

The overall profile is very similar, but the market gives us more room to move and the combination of Baker, King and just 54kg makes plenty of appeal.

Race 5 – Mr Miller

Mr Miller looks ready to win.

The Waller-trained Kiwi caught the eye running second last start and now profiles No.1 for both Early Speed and Race Time Price. The early market support only adds confidence.

Race 7 – Kerguelen

Kerguelen shapes as one of the better bets on the Gosford program.

The closing speed figures tower over this field and it’s not particularly close. Stable form, jockey booking and race setup all suggest a big performance is coming.

Ascot

Race 1 – Precious God

Short-priced favourites aren’t always exciting, but Precious God looks deserving of the quote.

Clearly the best horse in the race, gets a handy 2kg claim through Holly Watson and the overall profile is simply superior to the opposition.
