Shaun Beirne is taking on two well-fancied runners at Doomben on Wednesday, believing both are under the odds for very different reasons.
His focus is on Extreme Diamond in Race 4 and Facundo in Race 7, with Beirne finding value elsewhere while also identifying a pair of bookmaker specials worth considering.
Doomben Race 4 – Taking on Extreme Diamond
Beirne has reservations about Extreme Diamond despite the gelding’s first-up performance.
“He’s second-up after a bleed and that’s always something I’m cautious about.”
He also feels the horse’s recent run has been overrated.
“His rating first up was only bettered by his maiden win some time ago, so can he reproduce that? Let alone find a new peak.”
Instead, Beirne believes Ruins Of Rome is the runner punters should be siding with.
“Ruins Of Rome improves sharply second-up every preparation and I think he should be much shorter in betting.”
Bet Legends Special: Extreme Diamond to finish 1st or 2nd @ $2.50 (odds subject to change).
Doomben Race 7 – Happy to wait for Facundo
Beirne is also prepared to risk Facundo first-up, believing the conditions aren’t ideal for the talented galloper.
“The blinkers come off first-up and I don’t think 1110 metres is the right race for him.”
Rather than backing him fresh, Beirne expects the horse to improve as the distances increase.
“I’d much rather wait until he’s getting out to 1400 or 1600 metres later in the campaign.”
With the favourite trading around $2.05, he sees little appeal.
“At around even-money, I’m happy to be against him.”
Bet Legends Special: Facundo to win by one length or more @ $4.00 (odds subject to change).
