Take Us On: Shaun Beirne Questions Market Confidence Around Randwick Features
Bet Legends analyst Shaun Beirne runs the ratings over Randwick and believes one of the day’s headline runners may be under the odds despite star potential.
Punters are rarely short of confidence when a rising star emerges through the autumn, but Bet Legends analyst Shaun Beirne believes Saturday’s Randwick meeting presents a classic case of reputation versus price.
While acknowledging the immense talent of headline mare Tempted, Beirne says the market may have overreacted.
“Tempted is clearly a class mare and potentially a genuine star,” Beirne said.
“But from a pure ratings perspective, she’s simply come up too short in what is a deep, high-quality field.”
Race 3 – Bear On The Loose
Beirne expects Bear On The Loose to take up a prominent role early but warns the race shape may blunt his winning chances.
“He maps to lead, but there looks to be genuine pressure which makes things tricky,” he said.
“He’s stepping from 1600m to 2000m in what looks a high-pressure race, which seems a risk. Adding to that, suspect he will only further improve out of this run.”
“The ratings don’t give him any clear edge at the weights and certainly don’t justify the $3 on offer.”
With little separating the main contenders on figures Beirne is happy to oppose Bear On The Lose.
Race 7 – Tempted
Despite holding enormous respect for the mare, Beirne believes punters are being asked to take unders at around $1.60.
“This is a stacked race full of progressive horses along with multiple Group 1 winners,” he said.
“She’s thrown in at the weights and absolutely has the class, but 1400 metres still isn’t completely ticked off.”
That uncertainty, combined with the depth of opposition, has Beirne taking a slightly different betting approach.
“She’s the most talented horse in the race, no doubt. But at the current price, she’s simply too short.”
Beirne is dangling a carrot in front of punters who think she’s totally dominant, offering $3.20 for Tempted to win by one length of more.
