She may carry the name of her famous father, but if there was any doubt that Taige Weir deserves her place as trainer in her own right, they were dispelled on Melbourne Cup Day.
Taige, whose father is of course Darren, trained her first city winner at Flemington with Billycart.
The emotion of her achievement was clear to see as the young trainer was mobbed by friends, family and random well-wishers on Tuesday.
Billycart rolls to victory for @WeirTaige and Dean Yendall… and that’s two-from-two! 🙌

”That, that was awesome,’’ she told Betsy.
‘’I was coming here today with a really nice horse. I thought the experience would get her today, just obviously being her second start, and there’s a lot of people here.
‘’So I thought it probably gonna get the better of her, but by gee, she let rip.’’
The humble Ballarat based trainer said the Flemington victory would do wonders for her boutique stable.
“This is massive for me,’’ she said.
‘’I’ve got about 35 horses in work at Ballarat. Still have got a couple of pre-trainers as well. But to get a winner this week, let alone Cup day, is just massive.’’
While her father is still not permitted to train, she said he still gives her advice when she asks.
‘’Like, he sort of sits back in the background a bit,’’ she said.
‘’He wants to let me run my own race, but he’s always there if I ask questions about anything like that.
‘’But it’s pretty special.’’
Such is the humility of Weir, she planned to run Billycart, before catching the country train home to Ballarat nearly two hours away.
Plans surely she’ll cast aside?
‘’Well, I was going home, but I don’t think I’m going home now,’’ she said.
‘’Now I’m probably catching the last train home back to Ballarat later tonight I reckon.’’
