Shaun Beirne doesn’t approach races purely as a bookmaker.
Long before Bet Legends, he was a punter and form analyst, building markets from ratings rather than hype or assumed upside. That lens shapes how he views races where the market appears far more confident than the evidence suggests.
This weekend, Bet Legends will be offering money back for second and third in the last race in Sydney – a race Beirne believes is more open than the market suggests.
Randwick Race 10: Beirne sees risk across the top of the market
Beirne believes the first three runners in betting are all worth taking on, to varying degrees.
“From a ratings point of view, none of them really stand out,” he said. “They’re all priced as though there’s a level of certainty that just isn’t there.”
Bella Montagna brings upside, but the Australian ratings don’t yet justify the price.
“There’s every chance she’s back and racing well,” Beirne said. “But her Australian numbers don’t support being as short as she is, and even from a middle draw she’s likely to be wide again.”
Her only previous attempt at 2000 metres came with strong market expectation, but things didn’t go to plan.
“She was expected to do more that day and ran into plenty of trouble,” Beirne said. “That gives her an excuse, but it doesn’t close the ratings gap.”
Full Hao presents a different set of concerns.
“He’s been up since October and this will be his seventh run of the preparation,” Beirne said. “To justify this price, he probably needs to find a new peak, and that’s hard to expect at this stage.”
Deal N’ Dash profiles as the most straightforward of the three, but still doesn’t fully convince.
“He’s third-up, should get a good run and the trip suits,” Beirne said. “But again, the ratings don’t justify the price, and I’ve got a knock on the overall depth of the form.”
Eagle Farm Race 5: Beirne comfortable risking Walsh Bay again
Walsh Bay has been a revelation this campaign but after successfully laying him last start, Beirne is happy to go back to the well.
“We said last start that his winning run was likely to end and made him our lay of the day,” Beirne said.
This setup may look kinder on paper.
“There should be more speed, which helps him,” Beirne said. “But he’s still tenth up, even with the six-week break.”
The core issue hasn’t changed.
“He still needs to lift his rating again to justify the price,” Beirne said.
That leaves Beirne content to oppose him once more.
“There’s plenty of value elsewhere,” he said. “We’re happy to risk him again.”
The Bet Legends position
