The mystery behind the disappointing run of highly-fancied import Yellow Jersey is closer to being solved after an update from Racing Victoria Stewards.
The import from France has been touted as a Cox Plate hopeful, however the gelding’s trainers, Tony and Calvin McEvoy, both expressed their surprise at their runner’s poor performance in the Heatherlie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
Despite starting the $2.15 favourite, he faded to finish 7th.
Tony McEvoy told Betsy on Monday that they had no initial insight into the poor result.
”I have to say I was very disappointed leaving the track,” McEvoy said.
“We have been over him and can’t find anything wrong with him.
“We might just have to put it down to experience.
“It was like an old Caulfield run, where he didn’t handle the track. He is much better than that.
“He just didn’t release when it was time to go. I don’t know if that was the ground or the track itself.
“I would like to get him to Flemington and give him a chance there before giving up on him.”
But on Wednesday night, Stewards revealed the gelding had since ‘’displayed soreness’’.
‘’Trainer’s representative Mr Ryan Moore advised that subsequent to the race on return to the stables, Yellow Jersey (FR) was displaying soreness for which the gelding has been treated,’’ Stewards said on Wednesday.
‘’Mr Moore advised that Yellow Jersey (FR) appears to be recovering well and the intention is to continue with the gelding’s preparation.’’
