I’m not getting good money to pore over the form. I’m just like the rest of you, a mug punter trying to make a bit of cash.
I like to keep my form simple and find a bit of value. I often punt with my heart rather than my head, but that’s what makes this game so great.
Now we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get into the bets.
FLEMINGTON
Race 3 No.3 Berkeley Square
Love him so much. It doesn’t get much better than a dual Ballarat Cup-winning gelding who doesn’t have a great turn of foot but is as tough and honest as they come.
Sure, some of these are far more progressive and potentially better, but he’s about 15 runs into this preparation and let’s not forget he beat Pericles in the Vase when he was three.
He has a tendency to be slow away, but if he steps with them, he’s a great each-way hope.
Race 5 No.5 Too Darn Discreet
Much like the fella above, who is also trained by Dan O, Too Darn Discreet owes me nothing.
She's so tough and honest and has been an ATM for plenty of punters throughout her career.
Love Mr Melbourne Cup Carnival/'Shall We?' Zahra going on (IYKYK), and love the weight swing she gets.
The tongue tie goes on (now we're getting technical, soz), which should help fix the throat issue she had last start.
Best Bet of the day.
ROSEHILL
Race 7 No.4 Arabian Rose
Another ATM for me recently. She's been so good this preparation, stepping up into tougher company.
Forget last start. She had nowhere to go and needed a chopper rescue to get her off the rails. She looked to be absolutely trucking and, while she might not have beaten Lazzura, I reckon she would've gone close.
I'm told by Deano she'll be in a much better spot this time around, and she can fly when she gets clear air.
She'll be hard-pressed to beat Lazzura, but a 1x4 play or even a Lazzura-Arabian Rose quinella could be the way to go.
Race 8 No.11 Welcometotheshow
He's such an honest horse. I don't think he's put in a bad run throughout his career, but he's really taken the next step this preparation.
He was very gritty in the Toorak against Lady Shenandoah, who has clearly franked that form, and last start he just didn't get clear air when he needed it.
Newitt goes back on, and it'd be a great story for Tyler Donaldson-Aitken to win this race.
He gets a weight swing in his favour against Declichy Boulevard from last start.
He can win!
Race 10 No.7 Perfect Picture
First-up here and she can mix her form, but she's two from three fresh, with her only blemish being a placing.
She's up against some OK horses here, but no stars. They're all midweekers, including herself.
Not sure she can win, but the price seems silly. She rattled home in both trials leading into this and I reckon she'll give a good sight at almost $30.
A 1x4 play could be the move.
EAGLE FARM
Race 9 No.5 La Roja
There aren't many horses Jack Bruce gets his hands on that he doesn't improve or manage to pinch a few wins with, and I reckon she could be another.
In one of her recent Sydney runs, she finished second to Declichy Boulevard, who is favourite for the Five Diamonds.
Last start, she finished second to Soothsayer, who has since franked that form by running second to Headley Grange.
Maybe I'm oversimplifying things, but she looks a great bet to me.
ASCOT
Race 10 No.11 Xentaro
No Pike in the last in WA to get us out of trouble, but hopefully Xentaro can do the job.
He was good behind Bassett Hound last start, who looks a very smart horse.
He steps up to 1200m now, which is a slight query, but he has terrific second-up form (2:1-1-0).
Let's hope we don't need to get to it, but he's a great chance in the get-out stakes if you've done your dough for the day.
