From Cummings’ right-hand Man to red-hot rookie trainer

From Cummings’ trusted right-hand man to red-hot rookie trainer, Nacim Dilmi is proving his switch from blue to red was a winning move

Nacim Dilmi has smoothly changed this season from blue to red, and transformed from loyal deputy to the boss and the results are unsurprisingly starting to flow.

Dilmi took out his trainer’s licence at the beginning of the season to work with Domeland’s team and has eight winners from his first 44 starters, including Oceanfront winning at Randwick on Cup day.

“I have kept things pretty similar to what I did with James [Cummings] and added a few ideas of my own,” Dilmi said. “It is good to [have] a few winners and we are working the system and have nice horses to work with.”

Dilmi has worked through his stock and will give Probability Theory her chance in the Spring Stakes to finish her first preparation with some black type at Newcastle on Saturday.

“She’s only small, 459 kilos, but she is a filly that we think can get through to a good level next time,” Dilmi said. “It is a good test at the right time for her, and if we could get Group 3 placing it would be a bonus at the end of this prep.”

Probability Theory was one of Dilmi’s first runners when she debuted, finishing down the track at Scone before a couple of wins at Hawkesbury, which suggests she will find the mile of the Spring Stakes a perfect trip.

“She just goes to sleep in her races and when Tommy Berry won on her, he said she is only going to go better over a trip with  time,” Dilmi said.

“I have to say I was disappointed at Scone, I thought it was just a pass mark, but since she has shown a good turn of foot in both her wins.”

“This will probably tell us a bit more about her before a break, and we might look at the Queensland winter with her.”

“There are some nice horses in the race but it is a chance to get black type.”
