A drying track and a handful of scratchings have changed the complexion of Friday night’s Gold Coast meeting, but Blair Gibson still believes there are a couple of standout betting opportunities.
While the fields aren’t quite as deep after the late withdrawals, Gibbo has landed on two runners he expects to prove very hard to beat over staying trips.
Race 1: Bon Riviere
Bon Riviere has shown plenty of ability in just two race starts and the step to 1800 metres looks exactly what he’s been waiting for.
The gelding was ridden too conservatively on debut before flashing home late, then was desperately unlucky not to score when narrowly beaten over 1400 metres last start after charging to the line.
That trip was simply too short and he looked like he would have won with another stride.
The rise to 1800 metres is ideal and in a race that lacks genuine depth, he shapes as the runner most likely to be charging through the line late.
Race 8: Kiroro Peak
Kiroro Peak has been holding his own against stronger metropolitan opposition and his latest run is easy enough to forgive.
After returning over 1400 metres following a break of almost six weeks, that performance looked very much like a fitness-building run ahead of this assignment.
The rise to 1800 metres is much more suitable and while he may be even better once he gets beyond 2000 metres, this looks an ideal race for him.
He does have to carry topweight, but the stable’s decision not to claim any weight suggests confidence, and he appeals as the horse to beat despite the impost.
