Apprentice jockey Tom Prebble has undergone spinal surgery, the Victorian Jockey’s Association has confirmed.
Prebble, a promising young rider, had been admitted to hospital following a fall at Warrnambool on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old son of Melbourne Cup-winning rider Brett Prebble was dislodged when his mount, Pulveriser, fell during a 2000-metre race at the 700-metre mark.
Prebble was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne for assessment.
“Thomas Prebble has undergone spinal surgery at The Alfred Hospital. He is being supported by medical and nursing staff. His condition will be monitored,” the VJA said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The family would like to thank everyone for their messages of support, checking on Thomas and his well-being. It is greatly appreciated. In order for the family to devote their time and energy to provide as much support as they can to Thomas it is kindly requested that their privacy be respected.”
The full extent of Prebble’s injuries have not yet been disclosed, but the association had previously confirmed he remains under specialist care.
Racing officials and fellow riders have expressed support for the apprentice, who is regarded as a rising talent in the Victorian riding ranks.
