Tony and Calvin McEvoy will mount a last-ditch effort to qualify two horses for next month’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic when One Day A Time and Face The Wild chase wins at two separate Queensland meetings on Saturday.
The fillies are among seven horses being campaigned in Queensland by the stable, which won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2018 with Sunlight.
One Day At A Time, who was placed on debut in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial (1000m) at Flemington, will tackle a 2YO handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Victory in the $105,000 contest will rocket her up from 25th in the ballot for the 2YO Classic but, while he’s got no doubts about her quality, Calvin McEvoy is concerned that she may find a couple of her rivals too sharp over 1200m.
Warwoven and Lumbini, the top two seeds on Bet365’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic market, headline Saturday’s field.
“She’s a very nice filly,” McEvoy said.
“The more we’re learning about her probably suggests that she’s going to appreciate a little further.”
“She just found them too sharp (over 1000m) on a quick track last start and she just got run off her legs.”
“We would (run her in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic) if she can get in, she was sent up there for that reason.”
“Sending two-year-olds that are unqualified up there can be fraught with danger and it’s a risk but one of the reasons we do it is to grow them up.”
“If she doesn’t reach black type up there (Queensland), she will at some point.”
Face The Wild was beaten as the $3.10 second favourite in the $250,000 Magic Millions Debut (1000m) last start but McEvoy expects her to be hard to beat in a Maiden at Toowoomba on Saturday night.
“She’s a little bit similar and she’s got to do everything right to win and get in,” he said.
“We were disappointed with her run the other night but she just got a bit of a bee in her bonnet, it was a very hot night and she just wanted to overdo things.”
“The horses that were in the firing line like her just had nothing left at the end of the race.”
“We’ll see what comes of it with prizemoney but we’ll be pretty disappointed if she’s not winning up there.”
