Newgate supremo Henry Field has spent 24 hours celebrating the Queensland Derby success of Providence, while fielding increasing interest in whether the son of Wootton Bassett and runner-up Monopolistic will be seen in another Derby in Hong Kong next year.

The Newgate colts syndicate had another Group 1 winner to celebrate, but if the offer is right, he could be the perfect Hong Kong Derby horse.

“We are, after all, a commercial operation. We have celebrated winning a Derby but in the next couple of days we bring the syndicate together to make decisions about the future,” Field said.

“They both look like being very good 2000m horses, which makes them very attractive to the Hong Kong market.”

Providence got a masterful steer from James McDonald, who settled further back than expected but made his move at the perfect time to run away for a length win from Monopolistic and Inspired Legend.

“Providence ran it out pretty strong but to be fair, I couldn’t have dreamed of a better run,” McDonald said.

“I had a ‘resting’ run the first half and was able to build into it when I wanted.”

“He’s run it out pretty strong but to be fair.”

“He’s probably not a true stayer. But at 10 furlongs he’s pretty sharp and he’s come a long way in a short time.”

Hong Kong owner Bon Ho owns third place getter Inspired Legend, but he is likely to stay in Australia for now, according Hall Of Fame trainer Les Bridge.

“It was a very skinny Derby preparation, so he did a great job, but he is a colt and the colts usually stay here,” Bridge said.

“He is still six months away, the horse, and he is going to get better being a Dundeel.”

“He will have a spell and come back in and we will decide what to do with him then.”
