Trainer Mick Price has declared emerging mare On Display a Group 1 winner-in-waiting after her impressive victory at Caulfield on Saturday.
The four-year-old stormed home over 1400m, displaying a sharp turn of foot that convinced Price she is ready for top-level success.
Price believes the mare’s ideal target is the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day.
“I think she can nearly win the Group 1 (Empire Rose). A mile is a beautiful distance for her,” Price told SENTrack‘s Giddy Up. “Every day we look at how horses pull up from races and she just walked out of the box like she had not been to the races. I think she’s got great capacity, I think she’s got great potential. We haven’t seen the best of her yet.”
On Display was unlucky not to land a Group 2 in Adelaide earlier this year, finishing unplaced in the Queen Of The South Stakes after being held up. Price admitted that missed opportunity has left the stable chasing ratings points this spring.
“She should have been a Group 2 winner in South Australia, which is why we are scrambling around for a few ratings points,” he said. “But she’s got a prep in front of her. Maybe she’ll have run number four leading into the Empire Rose. There’s a good little program for her. She’s a good mare.”.
