Punters can rejoice – one of the country’s best sprinters is set to continue racing and avoid the breeding barn.
Godolphin confirmed on Wednesday that Coolmore winner, Tentyris, would race throughout the autumn and even look at an Everest tilt in the spring of 2026.
“I don’t think we’re in any hurry to send horses to the barn. Obviously, the stallion business is important … and putting horses on the roster is a real primary focus of our business,” Godolphin Australia managing director Andy Makiv told SEN Track.
“So Broadsiding obviously went to stud, Traffic Warden went to stud this year. In recent years, Cylinder, obviously the great Anamoe and Bivouac.”
“So it’s a really important thing of what we do. That said, Anamoe trained on into his four-year-old year and did a great job winning that Cox Plate. So I think we give every horse their opportunity to train on, provided they’re sound, provided they are sound of mind, they’re racing well.”
“One thing which is well documented is that a really high performing colt that races on and has any disappointments, that obviously wipes the value off himself. So the important thing is, is provided they are adding value and all going as well as ever, then we have no real… there’s no real hurry for us to retire them.”
Makiv said that Tentyris could be headed towards an Everest, given the colt’s ability to snare the prize money and add value to his stallion fee.
“So we’d be hoping a horse like Tentyris, you know, you mentioned overseas, that’s an opportunity for him potentially, but also a race like the Everest,” he told SEN Track.
“We’ve got a slot in a race like the Everest. He would obviously shape up very well to be a strong candidate in that race, and it’s a $20 million race. So as much money as you can earn at stud, you can earn a lot of money on the racetrack too.”
“Australian prize money is at a point where, you know, retiring a horse and earning a lot of money in that first season of stud, they can earn that on one day as well, if all goes well on a certain race day.”
“So very mindful that it’s a business and mindful that good horses, or outstanding horses like Tentyris or Anamoe prior to him or Bivouac prior to him, they’re hard to find.”
Makiv also confirmed the star sprinter’s likely autumn campaign.
“He’s going to go Lightning [Stakes], then the Newmarket and then see where beyond that. So, obviously, he’s got a nice record up the straight, the one thousand meters is pretty sharp, but he’s got a kick-off somewhere, so likely to be the Lightning at Flemington into the Newmarket.”
Makiv said their other star, Tempted, will likely kick off in the Surround Stakes but her campaign will try to ensure she doesn’t run into Tentyris.
