Cranbourne Trials, August 4

Plenty of ‘good-ish’ horses were back at the jump-outs with spring just around the corner. Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr took the covers off two Ferraris who both look set to rise through the grades this spring. Pinstriped hit the line well in his jump-out, while impressive 3YO Signature Scent had a nice tick-over piece of work in heat fifteen.

Blackbook summary:

Heat Horse Summary
2 Chest Of Gold Dominant all the way win. Quality galloper with upside.
4 Cintaruto Led, kicked and ran time under his own steam. Exciting debutant.
13 Planet Red Top-shelf 3YO in the making. Strong trial, held together late.
14 Bronte Beach Brilliant work first-up. Big spring potential if sound.
16 Normandy Lass Sharp improvement this prep. Slick turn of foot latest.

Heat 2 – Chest Of Gold (1st)

Target – 1200m BM64, or even loftier goals

Talented gelding. Chest Of Gold was in the worst part of the track in his first trial this campaign but still performed well. However, this was a big step up, dominating the heat from the get-go, putting a margin on his rivals in the straight and running reasonable time. He’s a quality galloper that was prominent in the Future Stars Series at Pakenham earlier this year.

Heat 4 – Cintaruto (1st)

Target – 3YO Maiden

Wow! Lovely trial from this Shamus Award gelding. Cintaruto led, kicked and ran super time, all under his own steam. He showed a bit of talent in trials last campaign but looks to have come on this time around. His first jump-out was soft, but this showed real progression – he will be awfully hard to beat wherever he heads on debut.

Heat 13 – Planet Red (2nd)

Target – BM64 to resume, then onto potential Stakes targets

This could be a top-shelf 3YO. Planet Red’s debut win at Pakenham in May was outstanding, rounding up a handy field to win most impressively. His two trials this time in have been excellent, including going to the line hard held at Cranbourne on Monday. He’s a quality mover and the 1200m is going to be the bottom of his distance range – they’d have to have a race like the Caulfield Guineas at least somewhere on the radar.

Heat 14 – Bronte Beach (3rd)

Target – 1200m BM70 first-up, then onto bigger things

This mare has always impressed in everything she’s done, including this brilliant bit of work at Cranbourne on Monday. Bronte Beach is two-from-two and the sky’s the limit. The little concern is she’s only managed one run in each of her preparations, but potentially the stable put her away after her win at Sandown in May to eye off spring targets. This was her first jump-out of the campaign, so expect her to have another before resuming.

Heat 16 – Normandy Lass (1st)

Target – Shorter-course Maiden

Normandy Lass hasn’t set the world on fire in her two career starts, but three sharp jump-outs this prep suggest she’s ready to turn things around – in a big way. About 200m from home in her latest hit-out, she produced a slick turn of foot to put the handy Silk Sonic away with ease. Expect sharp improvement this campaign and, with an ugly-looking form card, we might just get a reasonable price.
