It’s a fair day out for this punter – a $5 bet into $12,000.
Made even better by the savvy work involved, cashing out on his six leg multi just in time.
Kyle Wheeler, a dairy farmer from Girgarre in regional Victoria, had a day out on Saturday.
Wheeler told Betsy his strategy heading into Saturday was a mix of his own form, a love for Moir Stakes winner Baraqiel and following trainer Clint McDonald.

The six leg multi kicked off with Jazz Affair at $6.50 in race 2 at The Valley.
“I liked Jazz Affair because it was scratched as favourite of a nice race at Morphettville so I thought they must’ve been confident to win the Moonee valley race,” Wheeler said.
The Chris Waller trainer Angel Capital was next at $2.60 before backing the much hyped Rosberg in race 6, paying $3.60.
“Angel Capital and Rosberg as I followed Clint McDonald in on both, but did like the look of them too,” he said.
Wheeler said he had previously backed Alpha Sofie, the winner of the Atlantic Jewel Stakes at $5.50.
Now things were starting to get interesting for Wheeler.
He considered cashing out before the Moir Stakes, but wasn’t happy with what he was being offered.
“It was $1600 cash out before Baraqiel, but I was keen on that horse and wasn’t happy with cash out so waited for that leg,” he told Betsy. “I’ve been following Baraqiel all its life and love the horse, but was quite keen on it.”
It was an inspired move as Ben Allen steered Baraqiel to an impressive win in the Moir at $6.
His last leg was King Zephyr in race 10 – one of the shortest prices in his multi.
“With one leg to go the potential collect was $30,000,” Wheeler said. “[After Baraqiel’s win] then I saw the 12k cashout. The first question I asked myself was, would I put 12k on King Zephyr to win and the answer was no so I cashed out straight away. The potential collect was 30k so it really wasn’t a tough decision.”
Not only was it an easy decision for Wheeler, it proved to be the right one too.
The short price King Zephyr went down.
“I had around 2.5k on King Zephyr to win as a single bet, so I still wanted him to win, but was very happy with my cashout in the end,” he said. “I simply cashed out as I wasn’t willing to risk 12k.”
Wheeler, who describes himself as a dairy farmer who loves racing, said he immediately withdrew his collect.
He told Betsy he had a similar collect one Mornington Cup Day.
“I have had some nice wins over the years. A 4 leg all up win at Mornington on Cup Day one year, I won around 15k off small stakes.”
