It’s Mortlake Cup Day and Mitch Lewis is back with the Crownbet Country Collect.
Mortlake is located in the western districts. The track has a sweeping home bend and shortish 280m home straight.
Mortlake Cup preview
Didn’t see a lot from (4) Breathless Spirit in his resuming run at Hamilton, but he has never been a runner who has shown much first-up into a preparation. He is now rising to the 2000m trip, where he found winning form last preparation, and looks well set up in this. They may run along quickly and he can get a soft run.
(1) Aftermath is flying, having run well in Cups over the last two weekends. He will go close again in this setup, but I’m expecting more pressure today and, with a heavy weight, he may be vulnerable.
(3) Tikemyson hit the line strongly when winning last start and should be better suited rising in distance off the back of that run.
(9) Omnic has speed and will likely lead early in this race despite a wide barrier. He gets in light at the weights after an apprentice claim, so could prove tough to catch with a soft enough run.
Suggested bet: (4) Breathless Spirit – Each-way
Best bets on the card:
Race 3 No.10 Villa Grande
(10) Villa Grande is looking close to a win having run 2nd in both of her career starts to date, she has only been caught late in both runs but maps perfectly here from barrier 2 and Linda Meech sticking will put her in an ideal position and she looks to get the right set up.
Race 7 No.1 Kingsford
(1) Kingsford gets his chance to improve on recent runs today given he is dropping in grade into the easiest race he has seen for sometime and will appreciate the rise to the 2000m trip where he has had success previously. From barrier 1 he gets an ideal set up.
